A cinematic travelogue through human weakness and emotion, from love and compassion to self-realisation, ‘Ayu,’ the second directorial venture of Chathra Weeraman, is now being screened in cinemas across the country.

A compassionate love story of a young man and a woman brought together by their fate, the film introduces General Daya Rathanayake, former Army Commander, to the film production.

Following his debut film ‘Aloko Udapadi’, Chathra Weeraman returns with a cast of young, talented, and versatile stars, including Sandra Mack, Jagath Manuwarna, Ashan Dias, Kenara Wiratunga, Samanalee Fonseka, Sampath Jayaweera, Priyantha Sirikumara, Thumindu Dodantenna, Nalin Lusena, Udara Abeysundara, Kasuni Kavindi Fernando, Akalanka Prabashwara, Dinushika Senevirathne, Thiwanka Ranasinghe, and Prasanna Dekumpitiya, with Dasun Pathirana making a guest appearance. The film also holds a special place in Sri Lankan cinema as it marks the golden jubilee of the legendary Malani Fonseka, acclaimed as the ‘Queen of Sinhalese Cinema’, celebrating
50 years in film with her 155th screen role.

Brought together by fate the young couple set on an intriguing journey of soul-search over the hustle of material life. They will inspire you to think about the purpose of life. Life is simply the experience of being alive from birth to death, which is however an endless struggle whether it gives a feeling of achievement or otherwise. Life is subjected to impermanence: good times and bad times both keep interchanging. When life is pricked with this bitter truth and become challenging, people tend to seek distraction and find relief from such unpleasant realities. They sometimes engage in entertainment or ensnare in fantasies which is known as escapism. In such situations the usual thinking patterns break and suddenly they want answers to life’s bigger questions. Lack of answers may trigger a personal conflict causing frustration and loss of inner joy. Nevertheless they will continue their search for a meaning as a primary motivation to get rid of the abysmal sensation of hopelessness and emptiness in their lives.

Presented by Weeraman Brothers, ‘Ayu’ features a talented behind-the-scenes crew including Kalinga Deshapriya as director of photography, Chamara Selara as assistant director, and Bimal Dushmantha as production designer. The film’s editing is by Saman Alvitigala, with music composed by Milinda Tennakoone. Harsha Manjula and Haroon Shaideen handle makeup, while Sasika Marasinghe serves as sound designer and Dinindu Jagoda as colourist. Costume design is by Kumara Karawdeniya and Shehan Obeysekara is the production photographer. Production management is handled by Iresh Karunarathne, Primal Ranasinghe and Sashika Ganegodage, with Anuradha Weeraman serving as Associate Producer.
