The grand hall of BMICH came alive on the evening of 30th August 2025 as music lovers gathered for the much-awaited concert ‘Vibes of Yesterday’. Starting at 7.00 pm, the event took the audience on a nostalgic journey through the golden eras of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, celebrating timeless classics and legendary voices.

The concert was organized by former musician Nilmini Nanayakkara, Chairman of N-KAR Travels and Tours, in aid of the Cancer Hospital, held in memory of his beloved wife, who tragically lost her battle with cancer. The evening became especially poignant when the oncologist of the Maharagama Cancer Hospital shared memories of Mrs. Nanayakkara’s selfless service to the children’s ward. Her dedication and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone present, and the touching tribute brought a hush over the audience.

In her memory, Nilmini made a donation of Rs. 4 million from the show’s proceeds to the Cancer Hospital, a noble gesture that demonstrated both love and generosity.

The Stars Shine Bright

Manjula Martis set the tone for the evening with nearly 15 golden oldies, demonstrating a versatile voice and remarkable range. Each song was delivered with precision, passion, and energy, leaving the audience mesmerized.

Rukshan Perera, Noeline Honter, Mariazelle Gunatilake, and Keerthi Pasquel, each added their unique charm:

Rukshan Perera, hailed as George Benson Junior, impressed with his guitar mastery and soulful vocals, carefully choosing songs that perfectly suited the evening’s mood.

Noeline Honter, introduced as “Luku Teacher,” lived up to her title, demonstrating why she is a legend and guiding light for the next generation.

Mariazelle Gunatilake, the “Kandy Lamissi,” charmed with her vocal finesse and stage presence.

Keerthi Pasquel, with his boyish charm and emotion-filled voice, stole the show with Kandula Ithin Sama Weyan and a medley of Clarence Wijewardena classics.

Adding a delightful surprise, Sohan was invited from the audience to sing his original hit Adarai, receiving roaring applause for a performance that energized the hall even further.

Xpressions: The Backbone of the Show

The ever-dynamic Xpressions were tight, precise, and full-sounding, performing every instrumental part with style and depth. Their mastery ensured that every classic came alive while maintaining the authenticity that longtime fans cherish.

Comperes and Crowd Magic

Clifford Richard (Cliff Richard) and Sharon de Bruin (Gypsies’ Lulu) kept the audience laughing and engaged throughout the evening. Their duet reached an international standard, drawing thunderous applause.

Despite the concert lasting nearly four and a half hours, the audience stayed on, dancing in the aisles and waving lights in unison, proving that every moment of nostalgia and entertainment was deeply appreciated.

A Night to Remember

The show concluded at 11:30 PM, leaving the hall buzzing with satisfaction. From the nostalgic melodies to the emotional tributes, from legendary voices to audience participation, Vibes of Yesterday delivered excellent entertainment without a single dull moment.

Congratulations to Nilmini Nanayakkara and N-Kar Travels and Tours for organizing such a remarkable and heartfelt event that celebrated music, memory, and love, while also supporting a worthy cause.
