Kandy’s chic new hotel stands tall with rolling views

The hill capital has the most salubrious climate, so Cinnamon has done the right thing by christening their latest hotel in Kandy, Myst – evoking not the opaque white fogs of Nuwara Eliya that blot out the mountains but verdant land with just the slightest chill and curly wisps above the meandering Mahaweli, crowned by flamboyant and ehela…

The chic new hotel with 16 floors is the largest in Kandy. “But you’ll never get lost here, I can assure you,” quips General Manager Dhinal Perera alluding to the simple, vertical design.

Touches of Kandyan heritage are everywhere. There are vermilion and yellow laksha (lacquer work) railings and motifs from the famed ‘cloud wall’ that borders the Kandy Lake. There’s a regal grandeur in that the predominant colour of the hotel is a beautiful gilt- perhaps associated with the Maligawa – that pervades the rooms as well.

None of the guest rooms has balconies, but you just have to draw the curtains to invite in the panorama of city and dreamy layers of mountain ranges fading away to the faraway hinterlands- Hunnasgiriya, Knuckles and Hantane amongst them.

On the culinary front, epicureans will not complain about the generous fare. Comfortable and relaxed, it’s where you can dine at Grains, the beautiful main restaurant dressed down, or maybe even indulge in a creamy pavlova by the poolside…

Breakfast is a serious meal with a indulgent spread of patisserie and the traditional hearty accompaniments but also good ol’ country fare- hoppers, pittu, string hoppers, etc. Lunch, dinner and high tea are all impeccable repasts. From their signature glass of Cosmos (a mocktail) to the roast chicken and a creamy panna cotta (just to scratch the surface) it was all very well done.

The rooftop Kosmos sky bar with its infinity pool gets snazzy at night as music and heartbeats pulse and that ‘dead as a dodo’ Kandy night life suddenly flares up. The rooftop has many a nook and cranny for seclusion in daytime as well.

There’s a smart gym, and a terrace with a spice garden tucked into the sixth floor- a delightful hideout where the greenery soothes.

The hotel has a tightly-knit feel, helped by the staff who are discreetly attentive and friendly, looking beyond their respective ‘departments’.

Already well patronised since it started in February, Myst promises to be a favourite in the happening and heady (even if a bit bunched-together and vertiginous) Kandy scene.
