‘It’s About Time’ besides exploring Sri Lanka’s post independent history aims to create a drive to go and learn about history and to learn about the lesser known parts that are little talked of, says Anisha Dias Bandaranaike, project lead for the exhibition.

The exhibition follows Sri Lanka’s post independence history in chronological order from the 1940’s to the present. The exhibits will be divided into four categories;

The 1940-1950 era will showcase national identity building, symbols of independence and the impact of the language policy. The second category, 1960-1970 will feature economic decision making, citizenship laws and the closed economy. The 1980-1990 era will showcase conflict and regional media perspectives. Finally, from 2000 to the present era, the exhibition will showcase the disaster of the 2004 tsunami, the 2022 economic crisis and the ‘Aragalaya’ protests. Since its inception in 2019, the project has travelled the country including the major towns – Jaffna, Kandy, Kurunegala, Badulla, Batticaloa, Mannar, and Galle.

The exhibition is particularly aimed at the age group of 14-20 but also welcomes older age groups as well as parents and teachers.

By focusing on the youth, the organisers aim to impart a broader understanding on the nation’s history and nurture critical thinking abilities, empathy and curiosity. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts and give feedback.

The new phase of ‘It’s About Time’ is implemented by the Collective for Historical Dialogue & Memory (CHDM). In collaboration with the Strengthening Social Cohesion and Peace in Sri Lanka (SCOPE) programme, with support from the EU and Germany.

‘It’s About Time’ will be open from August 19 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. at the Colombo Public Library.
