The new chic Bistro with Mediterranean flair

The Bistro des Marées, basking in golden morning light, looks every inch a chic, haute Parisian bistro, what with its black and white elegance, and just gazing in makes you hungry for a pain au chocolat and a café au lait.

But the latest restaurant to grace Cinnamon Life’s City of Dreams is more than French; it goes the whole Mediterranean, and offers a menu where the best fresh seasonal produce of our island- be it crab, prawn, barramundi or lettuce – is put together to create flavours from the warm zesty world of the Riviera and the Italian realm.

Rather chill-out with a panorama of Colombo under your eye (it’s on the 23rd floor after all) it’s the place for a business lunch or a quick dinner (or maybe a candlelit rendezvous), classy just like its logo of a 19th Century Parisian demoiselle and a twirly octopus connote.

The lunch set menu comes at Rs.  4,900 if two course and Rs. 6,400 if three course. Generous portions are guaranteed and the desserts are copious (the tiramisu I had simply filled me with the coffee-soaked ladyfingers so tangy). The variety is tempting, from the traditional (Salade Nicoise and a Provencal seafood soup) to the more venturesome (try the coconut chicken mango bowl).

Sanjiv Hulugalle, the General Manager of Cinnamon Life, an aficionado himself, tantalised us suggesting Chef Rumesh Fernando’s ‘healthy bowls’ (each magnanimously priced at Rs. 2500) which have a Sri Lankan twist, and the rich classic of the grilled ham and cheese sandwich, or the corned beef and sauerkraut sandwich (with succulent homemade corned beef).

There is too the seafood pappardelle and a host of other delights including of course a sublime selection of wines to pair with.

Garnered with some real verve française, this new bistro will prove to be a magnet for the discerning.
