Archaic law barring night work for female hotel workers scrapped
View(s):Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector this week welcomed a move by the government to overturn an archaic 1954 law that bars women from working as hotel and restaurant waitresses after 10 pm. The cabinet decided to amend the law allowing night work.
Chandra Wickremesinghe, a veteran hotelier and owner of Thema Collection which recently opened the first all-women operated hotel in Sri Lanka, said this was a good move. “If nurses can do night work, why can’t female hotel employees work at night? This is an absurd regulation,” he said.
Rodney Armstrong, Resident Manager – Mahaweli Reach Hotels said this has been a major drawback in the industry and will help attract more females if all the facilities like accommodation and transport are provided, M. Shanthikumar, Hotels Association appreciated the move but stressed that if a worker ends her duty at 12 midnight, she should be provided accommodation and/or transport home.
According to the prevailing regulations, female employees over 18 years of age can be engaged in the duties of a receptionist of a hotel with accommodation, an attendant of a female coat room, an employee of a female garments room or an employee of a female washroom for night work except females working as servers in hotels or restaurants.
