Investigations are underway into an incident in Kumankulam, Vavuniya where five police officers were injured following a clash between police and some area residents following the death of a motorcyclist.

According to police, two traffic policemen from the Nelukkulam police station had responded to a report stating that a motorcyclist was lying near a kovil in the area. When the officers had arrived at the location however, they became embroiled in an argument with some men who were at a nearby liquor store. They had alleged that the motorcyclist, who was dead, had been killed in an accident while being pursued by police.

The two officers had allegedly been attacked by some of the men and five more officers who had been dispatched by the Nelukkulam police to bring the situation under control were also allegedly attacked. The injured officers were admitted to the Medawachchiya Hospital.

The situation was eventually brought under control by the deployment of the Special Task Force (STF) and officers from the police riot squad. The body of the deceased motorcyclist was taken to the Vavuniya Hospital and a post-mortem inquest into the death will be conducted once a court order is obtained.
