8-year morgue breakdown at Lunawa Hospital burdens residents

The hospital morgue
For eight years, the Lunawa District Hospital morgue has been non-operational, forcing Moratuwa residents to spend a significant amount of money transporting bodies to the Kalubowila Hospital or Panadura Base Hospital.
The residents explained they have to bear the cost of funeral parlour vehicles to transport bodies to other hospital morgues and despite repeated pleas to authorities no action has been taken all these years, residents complain.
The matter was raised at a recent coordinating committee meeting presided by Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara
Moratuwa police also pointed out that people sought police assistance to transfer bodies.
Lunawa District Hospital Chief Medical officer, Dr H. Priyanthi Renuka said the refrigerators within the morgue have been damaged due to lack of electricity. She explained that drug addicts who entered the hospital had removed the electrical items while the container box had also got rusty.
Retired Judicial medical officer, Dr Asoka Indrathilake who worked as the last officer at the hospital morgue said that during his time, drug addicts repeatedly damaged the electronic system to remove copper wires. The morgue underwent repairs several times because of this, he said..
Justice Minister Nanayakkara, Mayor Nishantha Feranado and Divisional Secretary Prassana Kiriwaththuduwa who attended the meeting said that they would inspect the morgue and take necessary remedial action.
