The MJF Centre Auditorium in Katubedda, Moratuwa, was transformed into a celebration of musical brilliance and sheer determination on Saturday, June 7, as Bright Light—Sri Lanka’s first musical band comprised entirely of visually impaired young musicians—took the stage for their debut performance.

The visually impaired music group Bright Light, led by veteran musician Melantha Perera, truly lived up to its inspiring slogan, ‘Yes, We Can’’. Their debut performance delivered a powerful blend of music, humour, and emotion that left a packed audience both inspired and smiling. More than just a concert, the evening stood as a celebration of raw talent, unyielding determination, and the boundless potential of these extraordinary young performers.

But the show wasn’t just about singing. It showcased the group’s versatility through creatively choreographed and light-hearted skits. A standout moment came during their rendition of the Gypsies’ iconic hit ‘None Mage Sudu None’ in which the performers enacted a hilarious skit featuring a drunk husband and an angry wife. Midway through the song, Rashini—timing it perfectly—swung a broom and theatrically ‘hit’ the husband, prompting a roar of laughter and applause from the audience.

Even Melantha was taken aback by their execution. ‘Though I choreographed the act, I never expected them to perform it with such precision’ he remarked. ‘Some audience members even asked me if they were actually visually impaired’.

Adding to the evening’s surprises, the group—despite having no prior exposure to English music—confidently performed five iconic international hits: Hotel California, The Sound of Silence, What a Wonderful World, the Titanic theme My Heart Will Go On, and ABBA’s timeless Dancing Queen. Their professionalism, stage presence, and musicality left the audience in awe.

‘As a trainer and teacher, I am incredibly proud’ said Melantha. ‘I urge all music teachers to believe in the abilities of visually impaired students. Seeing is believing—and they’.
