With BYD leading the global new electric vehicle (NEV) market, Sri Lanka is seeing a rapid transformation from combustion vehicles to electric vehicles. The vehicle brand is creating a huge demand among customers here with more than 5,000 pre-orders been placed since the end of last year, Krishan Balendra, Chairman of John Keells Holdings and JKCG (BYD agent in Sri Lanka) said.

He was speaking at an event where BYD launched its latest Shark 6 off-road hybrid pickup at the Cinnamon Life Hotel in Colombo.

Mr. Balendra said, “Way before we started taking BYD vehicle orders from Sri Lanka, we educated the public on the benefits of electric vehicles. Today while BYD is leading the world as the number one NEV brand, Sri Lanka is seeing a rapid transformation from combustion vehicles to electric vehicles. JKCG Auto together with BYD is fully committed in achieving the aspirations of our customers and their commitment to global sustainability and electric vehicles is immense.”

BYD Asia-Pacific, General Manager, Liu Xueliang who attended the launch stated, “We see the love for our brand from a lot of Sri Lankan customers. BYD is committed to provide the best product in Sri Lanka. We want to satisfy all our customers facilitating the green technology development in Sri Lanka.”

During the Q&A session, it was mentioned that initially the demand was more towards the BYD Sealion 6 as it could travel 1092 km on one charge, but the demand has now moved towards all BYD vehicle brands, Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal and the newly launched Shark 6 where five customers were handed over the keys on the same day of the launch.

Meanwhile, parallel to its market expansion, BYD and JKCG Auto are also growing their showroom and aftersales presence with new locations planned in Ampara and Rathnapura. These additions complement existing showrooms in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Kurunegala, while after-sales service points are also expanding to cover Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Ampara strengthening support in all major automotive markets across Sri Lanka.
