Sumedha, Rumesh fail to make podium finish
Paris Olympics 2024 champion, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan claimed the gold medal of Men’s Javelin Throw at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea yesterday, as the two Sri Lankans in contention – Sumedha Jayasinghe and Rumesh Pathirage – failed to impress in the finals.
Pathirage completed the Men’s Javelin Throw final placing fourth with a throw of 83.27m in his third and final attempt, after missing the first attempt and achieving 76.51m in his second. Ranasinghe, meanwhile fell behind at overall seventh behind India’s Yash Vir Singh and China’s Hu Haoran, with a best throw of 79.81m in his final attempt, after missing out the first two attempts.
India’s Sachin Yadav gradually upped his rhythm, achieving 79.37m, 83.08m and his best of 85.16m to earn the silver medal, ahead of Japan’s Yuta Sakiyama, who claimed the bronze. Sakiyama threw 79.52m in his first attempt, slightly fell behind to achieve 79.35m in his second effort. But his third attempt, 83.75m, was sufficient for a podium finish. Pakistan’s Muhammad Yasir finished overall eighth.
