Mangoes with a Sri Lankan passport
Sri Lanka’s TomEJC mango has gained global recognition as the country exports 85 per cent of mangoes to West Asia, with shipments to the region steadily increasing over the past five years.
Mango cultivation in Sri Lanka has expanded by 11 per cent from 2015 to 2022 to reach 31,000 hectares, while the production for the same period has increased by 30 per cent to reach 193,000 metric tonnes.
Last week, Australia’s Market Development Facility (MDF) hosted, ‘Ripe for Innovation’ a symposium on Sri Lanka’s TomEJC mango sector at the Courtyard by Marriott in Colombo in the presence of industry leaders, government representatives and development partners to explore the export prospects of this high-potential sector.
At the symposium it was discussed to elevate Sri Lanka’s TomEJC mangoes for export. From more than one million TomEJC mango plants cultivated, a potential crop of 50,000 metric tonnes is expected. At present Sri Lanka’s export volumes stand at approximately 431 metric tonnes. Economic instability, rising production costs and adverse climate events have affected the recent export performance.
In the UK, consumption of mangoes has been increasing over the years due to an increase in availability and affordability. In China, mangoes have become the main product of domestic tropical fruit sales due to flavour and nutritional content.
Australia’s MDF analysis reveals that a clear opportunity exists for Sri Lanka to promote fresh mango in China and West Asia during competitor exporters’ off-seasons. Importers play a major role in deciding what mango they import and promote. Importer decisions are dependent on several source market factors such as free trade agreements, proximity, volumes and quality, and relationships and trust. Sri Lankan growers, processors and exporters see strong demand for Sri Lankan TomEJC mango in their export markets. While focusing on fresh exports, most Sri Lankan growers and exporters are keen to expand processing capacity whereby they can source mangoes from all grades and secure their supplier networks.
Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Paul Stephens who was present at the symposium shared that, “Australia, through the MDF, has consistently supported Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector since 2017, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to the country’s economic development.”
