NPP won most wards in Colombo, main political parties received support across city
View(s):The National People’s Power (NPP) won a historic victory at the 2025 local government elections when it emerged as the largest party in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). The party however, still fell short of an outright majority that would have enabled it to form the council administration without having to rely on other parties and groups for support.
Results from the CMC’s 47 wards show how the main political parties received support across the city. The NPP performed strongest in the wards of Kotahena East and Pamankada West, where it scored close to 60 per cent of the total valid vote. In wards such as Wellawatte South, Borella North, Kirula and Pamankada East, the NPP’s overall vote was 50 per cent or just under. The NPP also won nearly half the vote in Thimbirigasyaya; the ward from which its mayoral candidate Vraie Cally Balthazaar contested from. Other wards where the NPP polled well include Wanathamulla, Kirulapana, Cinnamon Gardens and Havelock Town.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) meanwhile, polled best in wards such as Kochchikade, Jinthupitiya, Hulftsdorp East, Fort, Mahawatta, Sammanthranapura and Masangasweediya. The United National Party (UNP) did well in the Narahenpita, Gothamipura, Maradana and Borella South wards. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) polled best in the Keselwatta and Hultsdorp West wards.
