Asia Rugby leadership under fire

Asia Rugby’s (AR) leadership, including its President, Vice President, and CEO, is under increasing scrutiny following a series of governance controversies that have raised questions about the organisation’s commitment to transparency and fair play.

Controversial postponement of SLR AGM

In Sri Lanka, the scheduled Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) was postponed by the Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Sports, citing a letter from the AR President. This move came despite a clear judicial order mandating the AGM to proceed, leading to allegations of undue interference and a violation of due process.

Allegations of political interference in domestic rugby

The intervention is widely perceived as an attempt by AR to influence SLR elections and support the return of a former SLR President. Critics argue this is aimed at securing internal power within Asia Rugby, undermining AR’s stated principles of neutrality and member equality.

JRFU Chairman suspension overturned by World Rugby

In a parallel controversy, World Rugby (WR) recently conducted a review into the suspension of Kensuke Iwabuchi, Chairman of the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU), from the AR Executive Committee. The review concluded there was no basis for the suspension, affirming that Mr. Iwabuchi had not violated AR’s Constitution or any World Rugby regulations.

Pattern of Questionable  Governance

The reinstatement of Mr. Iwabuchi has fueled wider concerns about AR’s internal governance. Observers point to a growing pattern of arbitrary leadership decisions and selective enforcement of rules that jeopardise the legitimacy of the organisation’s actions across Asia.

A credibility crisis at AR

With AR’s leadership supporting the unlawful postponement of the SLR AGM – despite a Sri Lankan court order – and now facing global criticism over the JRFU decision, the credibility of the AR executive is under serious threat. The upcoming Sri Lankan court hearing for contempt on April 28 may add further pressure.

Stakeholders demand transparency and reform

Rugby stakeholders in Sri Lanka and beyond are now calling for transparency and reform. Many believe that AR’s future legitimacy hinges on its ability to adhere to international governance standards, respect judicial authority, and avoid politically motivated interference.

The road ahead for AR

As attention turns to the courts and the upcoming rugby calendar, all eyes are on whether AR’s leadership will course-correct – or continue down a path that threatens the sport’s integrity in the region.
