Trainers to encourage safe driving
View(s):By Dilushi Wijesinghe
The Transport Ministry is set to launch its ‘Go-Safe’ campaign this week — an initiative aimed at reducing the rising number of road traffic accidents.
On Wednesday, a three-hour training of trainers programme will be held at the Wattala Toyota auditorium. The session, expected to be attended by 60 officials, will include experts in road safety from the police, the Department of Motor Traffic, and private sector organisations. “We will gather their insights and develop a presentation outlining key points for the campaign,” said National Road Safety Committee convener Damian Weerakkody.
Following this, a two-hour islandwide discussion will be held across all 25 districts on April 9, led by the trained facilitators. “This discussion will engage drivers and conductors of private and public buses, three-wheeler drivers, and even delivery drivers,” Mr Weerakkody said.
The campaign will be extended to provincial and SLTB depots, while talks will be held with private bus owners and drivers to address their concerns.
“Our goal is to instil a sense of responsibility among drivers regarding the country’s well-being and the value of human lives, rather than resorting to force or punishment. We want to encourage adherence to road rules, respect for speed limits, and compliance with traffic laws. This is especially crucial as we continue to see cases of drunk driving and drug-impaired driving,” Mr Weerakkody said.
On the basis of attendance, extra sessions will be scheduled for drivers who are unable to attend the initial session because of possible conflicts with bus schedules.
