The next meeting of the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) is likely to take place next month, a senior official at the Labour Ministry told The Sunday Times Business.

Asked to comment, the newly appointed Labour Minister Prof. Anil Jayantha Fernando said it was too early for him to state the date of this meeting since he was newly appointed to the post.

The NLAC had gone through a number of setbacks under the previous government where there had been concerns raised against the number of members representing a particular Trade Union (TU).

As a result a number of meetings that had to be held did not take place last year according to trade unionists.

Meanwhile, the joint TUs have been demanding for an increase in the salaries of private sector workers and in this respect, these unions are likely to meet at the end of this month and discuss on their mode of approach with the new government.

In the meantime, the proposed labour law reforms introduced by the previous administration had had been challenged in the Supreme Court by the TUs. A joint trade union group has filed a case against the bill on the new employment laws titled the Economic Transformation Commission Bill citing concerns that it violates the Constitution.

In the case the trade unions question the way in which the bill had been prepared without due consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

The trade unions have continuously raised concerns over the changes in the labour laws that will bring about a drastic difference in the work environment for employees.
