Serene River Park in Holuwagoda was opened to the public on Wednesday by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“It’s imperative that we prioritise initiatives like this.  Galle has emerged as a prominent tourist hotspot today, and we must  further enhance its development. By doing so, residents of these areas  stand to gain substantial income opportunities,” President Wickremesinghe said.

The 14-acre park features a lake, children’s area, walking paths, bridges, market stalls and a solar-powered electricity system.

A boat service from the park to Wakwella, Wataraka and Galle is to be introduced.

Construction of the park was initiated by Minister of Health and Trade Ramesh Pathirana in 2021 with an estimated budget of 440 million rupees.

Plans for the park were crafted by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), and construction work was carried out by Sri Lanka Land Reclamation Corporation.

The park will act as a flood control measure to alleviate long-standing issues faced by residents of  Holuwagoda and Opatha.

“Our focus must remain on tourism development, particularly in the Southern Province, which holds a special significance. We’re committed to relocating government offices from Galle Fort to facilitate tourism promotion. We’re actively engaged in strategic city planning efforts to elevate Galle into a premier tourist destination. Through these endeavours, Galle is poised to emerge as the primary tourist hub of our nation,” President Wickremesinghe said.

Minister Pathirana said: “Previously, such therapeutic gardens were exclusively found in the capital. Today, the residents of Galle can relish the tranquillity of an ecological park. It’s evident that during past economic crises, development stagnated. However, thanks to the economic initiatives led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the nation’s economy is experiencing stabilisation once again.”
