Sri Lanka Tamil Women’s Union honours four women

Celebrating the journey of women, the Sri Lanka Tamil Women’s Union held their International Women’s Day celebrations at the Colombo Hilton on March 2, honouring four women: former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Soundarie David Rodrigo, Ameena Hussein and Shanthi Balasubramaniam for their prowess in their respective fields.
Former President Kumaratunga was chosen for being elected as the fourth Executive, and first and only female President of Sri Lanka; Soundarie David Rodrigo for her contribution to the field of music as a music educator, pianist and presenting all genres of music locally and internationally; Ameena Hussein for her ahievements as a writer and a publisher and Shanthi Balasubramaniam for her outstanding performance in entrepreneurship and leadership.
The Chief Guest was former Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy while Indu Rubasingham, Artistic Director Designate of the National Theatre, London delivered the keynote address. A panel discussion conducted by Gowri Shanker Somasunderam was also held to focus on the awardees’ own individual journeys, influences and inspirations.
