Agri modernisation to make accurate predictions, increase productivity
The agriculture sector’s modernisation plans will help to ensure more accurate predictions on cultivation and yields and how productivity could be increased as part of addressing Sri Lanka’s food security concerns.
In this respect the first meeting of the Agriculture Modernisation Secretariat at the Presidential Secretariat was held on Monday with presentations delivered by a number of state departments with proposals to establish databases that will help to increase productivity and improve efficiency of resource utilisation.
The departments of fisheries, animal production, health, agriculture, green development centre and agrarian development were present at the meeting.
The respective departments detailed in their proposals the need to establish a common database with all focusing on increasing productivity and production and improving resource efficiency and moving towards a data driven decision-making system in future.
In future with the establishment of the data bases as in Geo goviya that has one million entries of farmers launched in October last year and other similar databases will be linked and be able to use this data to make firm predictions and assess the extent of damages to crop in addition to understanding the yields expected to generate prior to completion of the season.
This would ensure that the agriculture sector would be made more productive so that they could also address any issues early.
