The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the main tourist attractions in the country.

Tourists, both local and foreign, flock to feed fruits to the elephants and watch the jumbos bathe and frolic in the Ma Oya that flows by.

The two core objectives of the orphanage are conservation and reproduction. It also acts as a research centre for both local and foreign students.

In the first week of February, the number of tourists arriving in the country surpassed 60,000.

The Russian Federation has taken the lead for February, accounting for 15% of all tourist arrivals. Indian tourists came in second with 14%. With 9% of all tourist visitors, the United Kingdom (UK) comes in third.

The cumulative arrivals for January 1 to February 8 were 268,375.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka surpassed the Maldives in January this year with a spike in tourist arrivals.

During the same week, the Maldives welcomed 192,385 tourists, while Sri Lanka welcomed 208,253 tourists, noting a significant increase and a reversal of the pattern in January last year.

Sri Lanka aims to attract 2.3 million tourists this year, generating an estimated USD 4 billion in income.
