An employee of a private cleaning firm was detained by officials of the Customs Narcotics Control Division at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) when she attempted to remove a stock of jewellery and gold in gel form worth over five million.

The arrested has been identified as a 55-year-old resident of the Miridiyalanda area of Veyangoda. The suspect told Customs that she received the package containing the gold stock from an unknown woman inside a duty-free mall restroom at the BIA requesting her to hand over the package to a person outside the airport with the promise of a Rs 60,000 payment.

A spokesman for Sri Lanka Customs’ Narcotics Control Unit said that 1.4 kg of gold jewellery and 1.35 kg of pure gold in gel form were among the gold items found in the looted stockpile. Further investigations into the incident are currently being conducted by Customs.
