Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara yesterday informed Parliament that the government hoped to revise electricity tariffs again next month.

Making a special statement in Parliament on the Sri Lanka Electricity Bill that was gazetted on Friday, he said the recent heavy rains had enabled the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to generate more hydropower than they had earlier expected.

“We made a decision at the last Cabinet meeting held under the leadership of the President to review the situation on December 31 and revise electricity tariffs in January. We had earlier decided to revise tariffs in April,” the minister told the House.

Mr Wijesekara said he would convene a meeting on Tuesday to discuss practical proposals aimed at reducing electricity tariffs. He said he had already written to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to nominate five MPs from the opposition to present any proposals on behalf of the opposition.
