Gara Yaka appeasing ritual at Walli Yak Mangalya

For seven days, dancers and drummers from the abode of God Dedimunda from Aluthnuwara conducted the Walli Yak Mangalya at the Vishnu Devale. They were dancers and drummers who did not take part in the Kandy Esala Perahera.

They called for Gara Yaka to come to the forecourt of the Devale and take his offering in the form of sweetmeats, fruits, water and money.
Precisely at 4 pm he came into the forecourt and was questioned by the chief of the drummers Nisantha whether he would leave in peace without an evil eye on the Basnayaka Nilames, dancers, drummers and those who participated in the Perahera.
He said he would leave all in peace when he is given the offerings.
People around who know of the goodwill of the Gara Yaka come to the ritual and tie vows on the ‘tail’ of the dancers for the vows to mature before the next Esala Perahera.
The ritual was organised by the Basnayaka Nilame of Maha Vishnu Devale and the Basnayaka Nilame of Aluthnuwara Devale Mahendra Ratwatte.
