Rani Selvarajah, a fresh new voice in the literary world, has made waves with her debut novel, Savage Beasts, released in spring 2023. This British author of Sri Lankan heritage, offers a dynamic reinterpretation of the Greek myth of Medea in her book.

Savage Beasts narrates the life of Meena, the daughter of the powerful Nawab of Bengal, during the rise of the East India Company in the 18th century. Set against the political backdrop of 1757 Calcutta, it illustrates a world on the brink of war, love amidst chaos, and the clash of empires and cultures. The narrative arc from Calcutta to Ceylon and to the Cape of Good Hope shows Selvarajah’s knack for weaving together diverse geographies, striking a chord with international as well as subcontinent readers.

For Selvarajah, this isn’t just about telling a story, but rather breathing life into ancient myths, making them relevant and resonant. “Medea’s story has fascinated me ever since I first encountered it at school, and I am so incredibly thrilled to be bringing this reimagining of her story to the world,” she said.

Rani Selvarajah, originally from north-west London, studied Classics at the University of Cambridge and holds an MSc from SOAS University of London. Her decade-long involvement in feminist policy and research, particularly in the non-profit sector, reveals a dedicated commitment to social justice issues. This is reflected deeply in her literature, where she not only reimagines stories from antiquity but also touches upon intersectional experiences and migrant challenges.

Retelling a Greek myth: Rani Selvarajah

Rani’s father, C. Selvarajah, from Matale, migrated to the UK several decades ago. As a solicitor, he has carved a niche for himself with a reputed firm in London. Mr. Selvarajah, a prolific writer since his younger days has over 500 stories to his name, many of which have been published in Sri Lankan newspapers, including the Observer.

Savage Beasts was longlisted for the Mo Siewcharran prize, further testament to its emerging significance in the literary community. Beyond mere awards, the writer’s path to publication is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. The novel is the fruit of a collaboration between One More Chapter and the literacy charity Spread the Word, marking a concerted effort to uplift writers from underrepresented backgrounds. Rothwell acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Olivia Maidment at the Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency in what can only be described as a significant two-book deal.

In an era where the representation of diverse voices is more important than ever, Selvarajah emerges not just as a reteller of myths but as a storyteller bridging the past with the present, and the local with the global. Her Sri Lankan origins and international perspectives promise a rich tapestry of tales yet to come.

The book is now available in Sri Lanka.
