Colombo Rowing Club men’s team regained the Deepam Trophy

With 45 points accumulated from a total of 12 races in the 82nd annual Madras Colombo Regatta, Colombo Rowing Club won the Deepam Trophy awarded for men, while hosts Madras Boat Club annexed the Adyar Trophy on offer for women at Chennai yesterday.

The oldest international inter-club rowing event, established in the year 1898, consisted of 12 races, eight for men and four for women, across four boat categories, as Colombo RC won eight races. The visitors won the all-important Men Coxed Four ‘A’ with Arjun Wickramanayake, Maliq Hassen, Disas Sooriyarachchi, Sajin de Livera and Pasan Ranaweera at cox, beating Advaith, Gopi Anand, Rohit,

Vasikaran and Sanjay Gandhi at cox. In addition Colombo RC men won five races – Men Double Scull ‘B’, Men Double Scull ‘A’, Men Coxless Pair ‘B’, Men Single Scull ‘B’ and Men Single Scull ‘A’. The Colombo RC women won the Women Double Scull and Women Single Scull events to accumulate 45 points.

Madras BC won two each of races in Men and Women and won the Adyar Trophy on offer for ladies. The Chief Guest, Dr. D. Venkateshwaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai, gave away the Deepam Trophy to the winning men’s team who displayed flawless technique and amazing speed.
