Joes scrape through

St. Joseph’s College had a narrow shave against the gritty Wesley College as they scraped through to a 3-0 win in the Under 19 Dialog Schools Rugby tournament encounter played at the Royal Sports Complex ground in Reid Avenue yesterday.

Though the Josephians managed to chalk up their first win which came through the solitary penalty booted over by centre Ruchika Rodrigo in the first minute of play, they cannot be satisfied by their performance.

In fact, it was the Wesleyites who dominated proceedings in both the sessions of play but were unfortunate to miss out in scoring. It was pathetic to see the Josephian players’ using rough tactics which saw two of their players being sin-binned in the second half.

This has become a new trend in the schools rugby this season and many believe it should be nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand. The officials of the SLSRFA need to inform the officials responsible and take stern action against the perpetrators before any serious injury occurs as there are five more weeks for the tournament to end.

Referee – Isanka Abeykoon
