Murders, rape, child abuse and abductions have been extensively reported with two incidents in Kalutara getting prominence over the week.

Among the incidents has been the mysterious death of a 16-year-old schoolgirl who died after falling from an upper floor of a lodge in Kalutara. The case has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Investigations are yet to reveal whether it was a suicide or a homicide.

The main suspect was arrested and initially detained for 48 hours for interrogations. Police produced him before court yesterday once again and the Kalutara Magistrate ordered that he be remanded till May 26.

To determine whether the bite marks discovered on the girl’s body belonged to the main suspect, the police requested the court to direct that the 29-year-old suspect be examined by a forensic pathologist. The magistrate ordered that this should be done on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the Kalutara lodge owner’s wife has been remanded till tomorrow.

The 48-year-old woman was arrested for not properly checking the National Identity Card (NIC) of the girl before providing her with accommodation at the lodge.

The main suspect had claimed that despite being intimate with the victim, they had no sexual contact. He claimed that the girl had got a call and used profane language to yell at the caller. He also said that once the call ended, she climbed on to the chair next to the window and jumped out.

The police and the navy have launched a joint search operation on Friday (12) to locate the mobile phone used by the teenage girl. The phone is believed to have been thrown into the Kalu River.

Meanwhile, another gruesome incident was reported from the same Police Division, Kalutara where a private tutor was detained for allegedly molesting schoolgirls. He was remanded until May 26.

The tuition teacher was arrested after his wife complained to the police that there were sex clips of young girls on his laptop. The wife said her husband was having extra-marital relationships.

She had alleged that she had discovered video recordings of the tuition class teacher sexually assaulting young girls while looking through her husband’s laptop.

Investigations were carried out by the Kalutara Division Child and Women Abuse Prevention Bureau.

However the bureau’s officer in charge Disna Priyanthi said that even though the media had reported 16 students had been sexually abused so far only four were reported.

The bureau chief said the aggrieved girls and their parents were reluctant to come forward.

The suspect is to be examined by doctors to confirm whether he had Sexually transmitted diseases or psychiatric problems.

Meanwhile, the abused children were also produced before the judicial Medical Officers.

The tuition teacher’s mobile phone, the laptop and the vehicle were taken into custody and investigations are being carried to identify the victims.

Meanwhile, in Gampola, a 22-year-old girl who was reported missing since last Sunday had been killed and buried. A 24-year-old youth has been arrested over the killing.

Investigations have revealed that the youth had made an indecent suggestion to the girl and she had said that she would inform her father. Thereafter, the youth had allegedly dragged her into the shrub jungle, killed her and buried the body.
