State sector employees contesting local polls to be transferred to nearby stations

A circular on transfer of public sector employees contesting local elections will be issued next week, Local Government State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura told the Sunday Times.

According to the circular, the state- or semi-government sector employees who are contesting the elections will be granted permission to work in a nearby station outside their council area.

This move has been taken to prevent these candidates from promoting themselves by engaging in work in the areas that they are contesting.

The state minister said the proposal had been sent to the Election Commission after the cabinet had approved it. He said a circular to this effect would be issued next week once the EC approved the proposal and the candidates could accordingly request the transfer from their department heads. The employees would be entitled to their full salaries and allowances despite the transfers, he explained.

Mr Wakkumbura said that only about 20 percent of the candidates were stationed within the contesting area and they had been asked to temporarily withdraw from work from March 09.
