Over 65 percent of schools with Advanced Level classes do not offer science subjects, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said.

UGC Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga told the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) recently, that of the 2952 government schools that have Advanced Level classes only 1011 offer science subjects as an option.

COPE chairman Prof. Ranjith Bandara raising concern over the matter advised Education Ministry secretary M.N.Ranasinghe to immediately intervene and prepare a work plan to enable more students to get into science and technology fields in higher education.

It was also revealed that about 26 percent of students who received university admission in 2021 had studied in the A/L Arts stream.
