the Meteorological Department has said the sun will be directly over Sri Lanka from April 5 to April 15.

The Health Ministry also advised people to remain hydrated and avoid being exposed to direct sunlight. Elderly people, children and expectant mothers are more prone to dehydration and heat-related illnesses during warm weather.

However, even in such adverse conditions, around 10,000 farmers and labourers in Kalpitiya of the Puttalam district are working outdoors. They are taking precautions such as wearing clothes which completely cover their bodies. But they are also suffering from various complications due to being exposed to direct sunlight on a daily basis.

Kalpitiya farmer Reginold Christ said the sunlight was more severe than before.

“The sunshine is too much. It is unbearable,” he said.

Puttalam Hospital Director Sumith Attanayake said medical advice, including precautions that need to be taken, had been given to the people.

Taking breaks from outdoor activities and staying hydrated are some precautions

“Reports confirm the sunlight is more severe than previous years,” he said, explaining that there was a high risk of dehydration for people working outdoors due to excessive sweating.

People staying indoors had also been advised to open doors and windows during the daytime.

Meteorological Department Director General Athula Karunanayake said Sri Lanka is currently undergoing an inter-monsoon period, which began last month and will end late this month.

He said the severe sunlight causes evaporation which led to the formation of clouds.

“However, these days, the formation of clouds has reduced, leading to a highly humid climate. This high humidity causes excessive sweating which does not stop,” he said, advising people not to continuously work outdoors.

Mr. Karunanayake said he expected this situation to continue throughout this month but added that a little rain might occur. Moreover, he said heavy rain can be expected next month.
