Celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year without suffering injuries and causing grief to others.

The police say 85% of accidents during this cultural festival is usually the result of negligence.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said people should try to prevent accidents.

Security will be tightened by the armed forces throughout the New Year period.

“Those going on pilgrimages and excursions tend to forget about their safety. Avoid speeding. Accidents may occur in the highlands. Pay attention on narrow roads and look out for road signs. Special measures have been taken to act against reckless driving,’’ SSP Thalduwa said.

To avoid injuries, people should not engage in any sports activities that are inappropriate for them.

People are also being told not to hold fireworks in their hand to light them up. Fireworks should be kept away from children.

Fireworks should also not be set off in the direction of houses, vehicles, pets or individuals.

As for public travel services, the Sri Lanka Transport Board said services will operate from April 18.

Chairman Lalith de Alwis said buses to the provinces will run from April 17 day and night from Colombo. Buses will serve Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Galle, Matara and Hambanthota.

Passengers can reserve seats by calling the SLTB hotline 1315, through the mobile application, or via sltb.eseat.lk
