Sri Lanka’s education system will be undergoing a revolutionary change soon with the introduction of new method of module based education on how to use the theoretical knowledge gained in the class room for the day-to-day practice in their environs, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha disclosed.

The new system STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

A STEAM activity is a lesson that covers one of the core STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Maths, Minister Premajayantha told the Business Times    It’s a common abbreviation in the education world to reference these important subjects and skills in and out of school, he added.    The aim of STEAM is to inculcate the knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics among school children with more experiential learning opportunities integrating it with Arts.

They will be given a knowledge on arts practices, elements, design principles, and standards to provide the whole gamut of learning at their disposal. STEAM removes limitations and replaces them with wonder, critique, inquiry, and innovation.

The Education Minister noted that this new system is being implemented in 96 countries including the US and Finland and it will be introduced in Sri Lanka shortly.

Recent research shows that STEAM is a promising approach to positively impacting student achievement and teacher efficacy.

Sri Lankan school children should be given an opportunity to get accustomed with observations and practical experience in the environment allowing them to conduct their studies in various places, he said.

A national science education centre will be established to provide facilities for school children to study nano, bio and gene technologies through the module system of STEAM education, he added.    After the module-based learning programme is introduced, the national examination procedure would be relaxed to a certain extent as 70 per cent of the marks is to be based on activity completion and assignment submissions while only 30 per cent of marks would be based on aptitude tests.

Students will be allowed to work in groups and spend more time researching the subject matter, instead of memorising and sitting for three-hour exams.

The main aim of this education reform is to widen the skills of students that would be of use when they join the workforce
