Spoken English would be introduced in schools starting from Grade 1, from March 30 onwards.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, stated that 13,800 teachers have already been trained to introduce Spoken English to Grade 1 students.

He said this move would bring public school students on par with international school students.

“English is important as a coordinating language and for the Information Technology field as well. A person who knows English would be able to obtain jobs in Sri Lanka and abroad,” the Minister explained.
