Public policy subjects lacking in higher education: President

The J R Jayewardene Centre will be transformed into the J R Jayewardene Centre for Parliamentary Politics offering education and information for parliamentarians and provincial council members, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

Addressing the launch of the Centre for Governance and Public Policy (C-GaPP) at the Sri Lanka Technological Campus (SLTC) Research University in Colombo this week, he said the subject of governance and public policy is lacking in the country’s higher education sector. “We are now taking steps to start the University of Government and Public Policy. That will be at the postgraduate level, so graduate degrees and undergraduate degrees are required,” he said.

He said the newly-launched Centre for Governance and Public Policy, along with the Institute of Public Policy, Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Sri Jayewardenepura University, can offer courses on governance and public policy.

He added the government plans to introduce an Institute of Economics and Trade, as well as an Institute of Women and Gender, all of which will require research and input on the subject of public policy.

“We need research in universities, and we will help research even in non-government universities,” he said.

The President said the launch of a new Climate Change University as a regional or international university will take place with a number of foreign stakeholders.

“The government is expanding the sector of non-government universities and non-UGC universities, in addition to State universities or State-sponsored universities. We have to think of new laws to regulate these institutions,” President Wickremesinghe pointed out. (NF)
