Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka in Seoul.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Republic of Korea, with the Lankan community, celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Independence in Seoul on Febr 4.

The traditional oil lamp was lit by the Ambassador, Sri Lanka’s two Honourary Consuls in the Republic of Korea and Lankans representing the business community, professionals, migrant workers and students in South Korea. Multi-religious blessings were conducted by the venerable maha sangha and religious dignitaries to bestow peace and prosperity on Sri Lanka and her people.

Ambassador Savitri Panabokke, addressing the gathering, invited Lankan expatriates living in South Korea to become partners in the development of their motherland and to promote the interests of the country. During the event, three Sri Lanka migrant workers, H L Chathuranga Senevirathna, R H R Dulip Kumara and G J Ruwan Chinthaka, who saved the lives of two Korean Air Force Officers following their plane crash into the sea in August 2022, were felicitated for their bravery. In addition, the Lankan community in the Republic of Korea handed over a donation for the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Sri Lanka.

Lankan Ambassador to Korea meets with Ban ki-Moon

Ambassador Savitri Panabokke met with former UN Secretary General and President and Chair of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Ban Ki Moon on February 1 in Seoul prior to his departure to Sri Lanka this week.

During the meeting, Mr Moon recalled his longstanding friendship and engagement with Sri Lanka over the years, as a diplomat, during his tenure as the UN Secretary General and in his present capacity of President and Chair of the GGGI.

Ambassador Panabokke expressed appreciation for the GGGI’s initiatives in Sri Lanka and discussed means for further assistance to the country on issues relating to climate change and green growth.

Sri Lanka currently holds the position of the Vice President of the Assembly of GGGI and the Vice Chair of the Council of the GGGI.
