Move to reduce Islam and Christianity teachers intake; CFJ complains to HRC

The Centre for Justice has lodged a complaint at the Human Rights Commission (HRC) against the alleged move by the Ministry of Education to reduce the intake of student teachers for Islam and Christianity courses in Tamil medium at national colleges of education.

The Centre said during previous years the Ministry of Education called an equal number of applications for the admission of student teachers to national colleges of education for Hinduism, Christianity and Islam courses in the Tamil medium.

However, last year the number of candidates was reduced to 10 each for Christianity and Islam while 30 candidates were admitted to train to teach Hinduism in the Tamil medium.

“The decision by the Secretary of the Ministry of Education to reduce the admission of student teachers for Christianity and Islam courses has caused a huge injustice to hundreds of candidates,” the Centre said in its complaint. It further said that the decision comes at a time when there are vacancies for Islam (Tamil medium) teachers in national schools and all provinces, except Sabaragamuwa, and vacancies for Christianity, both Roman Catholic and non-Roman Catholic (Tamil medium) in national schools, in the North-Central and North-Western Provinces.

In the complaint, the Centre cited an inequality that has arisen among candidates for religious courses, and requested the HRC to commence an investigation and to advise the Education Ministry Secretary to revise the gazette issued last year.
