The 8th edition of Jaffna International Cinema Festival, one of the major events in country’s cinema calendar is now being held in Jaffna. Started on December 30, the festival will go till January 8 with a youth film camp held from December 30 to January  1.

This year’s festival will be opened at Regal Cinemas, Cargills Square in Jaffna on January 2 at 6.00p.m with the screening of internationally awarded ‘Bulletproof Children or ‘Vedi Nowadina Lamayi’ by Indika Ferdinando.

‘Vedi Novadina Lamai’ had its world premiere at the 12th Bangalore International Film Festival 2020, India. It has been officially selected for the 33rd Golden Rooster Film Awards – 2020 in China, and was in competition for Best Foreign Film category. It won the ‘Best Narrative Feature’ at the Indus Valley International Film Festival, India this year.

Public screenings will be held at Kailasapathy Auditorium, University of Jaffna from 9.00am – 8.00pm from January 3 to 8. Everyday there will be four screenings of  films representing 24 countries. Participating countries this year are Germany, France, USA, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Italy, Spain, Malta, Brazil, Belgium, Switzerland, Ghana, Lebanon, Georgia, Sweden, Slovak Republic, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Poland, Tunisia and Sri Lanka.

There will be master classes on sound designing, cinematography and Storytelling by National and International experts.

A total of nine films will compete for the Best debut film award and Ceylon Theatres will present an award for the best national short film. Two International juries with film critics and experts will adjudicate the films this year.

Twenty five National and International short films will be screened during the festival and the audience will vote for their choice of short film. A panel discussion focusing on the subject ‘Sri Lankan Tamil Cinema: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ will be held at 12.45pm on January 6.

Awards presentation will be held at Regal Cinemas on January 8 and the closing film this year is ‘The Protector’(Canada) by Lenin M. Sivam.
