The Nativity – Miraculous birth of GOD-Man

The most stupendous drama in the human history is the remarkable birth of Jesus Christ. The Word became flesh – John 1:14 – means God became human. God’s paramount requirement was to remove sin. God of the universe who created everything except sin becomes a creature and took the human body.

Only the gospels of Matthew and Luke provide specific accounts of Jesus’s birth. To be very poignant and brief to, shall begin with the most endearing description of Luke’s story of shepherds, “keeping watch over flock by night.” In the fields close to Bethlehem, perhaps not considered to be simple gentle people who intrigued into others lands to grace their flocks. However, I believe on a deeper level that Jesus the Saviour was the shepherd Son of David, the shepherd boy, the ancestor of Jesus’ genealogy. Luke’s story in reality is a grand celebration of Jesus’ birth with a multitude of heavenly host with shepherds going back to properly announce the birth of the Messiah, until the time of His public ministry. Also Luke manifests His humanity as born in a manger. Luke alone tells the story of shepherds visit.

Matthew located Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Of course very brief, but narrated the visit of the wise men or ‘Magi’ (Matthew 2:1-2). Nevertheless, Matthew delved into Jesus’ genealogy and ancestors, going back to Abraham. Interestingly in his genealogy he includes four (4) foreigners (gentiles), may be according to God’s plan. They were Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bethsheba. In this context I am curiously reminded of Jesus’ charge and commission to His disciples to ‘go unto all nations’ (Matthew 28:19). Also mentioned in Acts and Paul’s epistles.

I would like to close this discourse, of course not abruptly, but acknowledging, 1. Christ became flesh, 2. Christ loved us, 3. Christ is bread of life, 4. Christ is the light of the world, 5. Christ is our Shepherd, 6. Our everlasting Saviour throughout our life’s journey.

Christmas is to
follow Him till He comes.

Come Jesus Christ quickly. Amen. Revelation 22:20

Evangelist Felix Mendis
