The German GIZ-funded access bridge across the Kala Oya in Wilpattu was opened this week in the presence of German High Commissioner Holger Seubert, GZI representative, and Wildlife Department officials.

The bridge was built to increase access to the Wilpattu National Park through its entrance in Puttalam from the Eluwankulama Crossway. The Rs 41 mn bridge was commissioned and inaugurated in December last year as a solution to obstructions in the entrance to the Park from Puttalam. This entrance will function as a counterpart to the main park entrance in Hunuwilagama. Visitors to the Park had been deprived of the sight-seeing spot provided by a bridge over the Kala Oya when the Thalawila bridge collapsed a few years ago.

The Eluwankulama Safari Jeep Association and the Eluwankulama Tourist Hotel Owners Association had set up a temporary boat service across the Kala Oya in the meantime, but concerns about the safety of this service had been raised. The newly set up bridge is 63 metres long and hangs 30 feet over the waters of the Kala Oya. Tourists that come to visit Wilpattu through the Eluwankulama Crossway will be able to park their vehicles in a parking lot near the Crossway Navy Command and cross the bridge to access safari jeeps that can take them deeper into the Park.
