Brick makers are facing great distress being unable to sell their bricks due to the collapse of the building industry, brought on by high cement prices.

These brick-makers from several villages including Pallama, Nagavila state that they are unable to sell over 2 million bricks, which are now stored in their ovens meant to prepare the bricks.

About 500 families, with almost 2,000 persons, engaged in producing bricks in Nagavila, Arasanwewa and Wilpotha East and West to meet the high demand which existed previously, have been inconvenienced by the current situation of the country.

Every house possesses over 10,000 or 15,000 bricks stored, but a lorry arrives only occasionally. The brick makers are forced to sell bricks at low prices bearing losses, since there is no other option.

Expressing his distress, brick maker N W N Sanjeewa Nishantha stated “We are suffering as families. We cannot do anything. We invested whatever money we had in the business, now we do not even have anything to eat.”

Another brick maker G P Dayananda said: “One brick oven could provide for seven or eight people, but now we do not have anything to eat”.
