Despite the myriad of challenges in the current environment, Dialog aims to invest in the right technology, etc over the next few years.

“We cannot plan to be negative. We have a positive outlook on Sri Lanka and its people, and we will get out of this crisis,” Navin Pieris Group Chief Officer – Dialog Enterprise, Dialog Axiata PLC told the Business Times in an interview recently.

As is with any other company, Dialog in the last two years has also been different. “Due to the challenges with COVID-19, and, the ensuing crisis, we had to be agile and assisted both people and corporates with connectivity. Especially during the work from home situation, we had to ensure the connectivity to work from home securely,” Mr. Pieris said noting that as a result, this became their most popular solution, notably after people started a hybrid system of working – as in work from home as well as work from office intermittently.

During the twin crisis, there was a shortage of several products such as chipsets (which are electronics on the motherboard of the computer), and also logistics was an issue.

The company resorted to introducing their local cloud and data centre in this regard, which also became popular products.

Mr. Pieris pointed out that globally there is still a shortage of chip sets and still supply-side shortages are happening in technology. Sri Lanka is still facing liquidity issues. “On the other hand, companies are still looking to grow in Sri Lanka. We are building solutions to help them,” Mr. Peiris pointed out. He said that in this regard, the company is scaling up their local cloud. “Many companies that earn in rupees have issues paying in dollars and we came with the local cloud to give them the capacity to be able to continue their business.”

He noted that all companies are looking at efficiency as being key in getting on with business, as all are challenged.

The challenge of managing fuel came in with the fuel crisis as this was also the case for Dialog Plc, the company came up with a home-grown solution to manage fuel and track vehicles and generators while managing the fuel levels in the company. “This solution which we initially built for our company was useful to other companies as well, as we realised. And then we make it into a product and sent it to the market, which is very successful now,” Mr. Peiris explained.
