Contrasting wins by favourites

Mahanama, Royal, Trinity, Devapathiraja and St. Joseph’s won their matches in rather contrasting fashion at the ongoing Schools Under-19 Limited Overs Tournament played at different venues yesterday.

St. Joseph’s were the first to record an early win in their low scoring match played against St. Benedict’s at Kotahena where the whole encounter lasted less than 50 overs.

Mahanama travelled all the way to Matara to record a comprehensive win of 159 runs against St. Thomas’, after electing to bat and putting a total of 249 for the loss of six wickets. Mahanama put up a valiant team effort to bowl out the Matara Thomians for 90.

At Reid Avenue, Royal recorded a win of similar fashion after beating Prince of Wales by 137 runs. The Cambrians perhaps made an erroneous decision by putting in Royal into bat first in their own backyard, as the hosts went on to pile up 255 runs before being bowled out in the final ball of their innings.

Uvindu Weerasekara made the highest individual score of the day, hitting 94 runs, yet missed out a well-deserved century. The Cambrians were restricted to 118.

In a slow paced unimpressive game Trinity managed to cling on to record a close 2-wicket win against St. Anne’s at Kurunegala.

Devapathiraja Rathgama, who are making waves in the top division, made a giant kill when they recorded an impressive 33-run win against Zahira at Maradana.
