Gateway College and Oxford University Press (OUP) have joined hands to introduce the Gateway Oxford Maths Olympiad (GOMO) this month, aimed at developing a culture appreciative of mathematics and further raising the overall standard of the subject within the Gateway group of schools.

Gateway College will work closely with the Sri Lanka Olympiad Mathematics Foundation (SLOMF) on this project, which provides training and facilitates competitions among Sri Lankan students with the intention of producing teams that represent Sri Lanka at recognised international competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO), and the International Mathematics Competition (IMC).

The Gateway Oxford Maths Olympiad will be open to participation from over 5000 students across five schools of Gateway College, empowering students to participate in the Sri Lankan Mathematics Competition (SLMC) to be held on 9 April 2022. As part of the initiative, MyMaths, OUP’s interactive online classroom and homework service for teaching, practicing, and assessing children’s maths fluency, will also be used to train students. Over the years, Gateway College has been using many OUP resources, both, printed books and software.

Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman Gateway Group, said: Following almost two years of trials and tribulations, the teachers and students of Gateway have evolved to be more resilient and better skilled to move into 2022 – the year during which we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Gateway has had a long and professional relationship with Oxford University Press with whom we work at all levels from Kindergarten to Advanced Level. I am confident that GOMO will mark the beginning of a new phase of excellence for our dear students.

Mr. Sumanta Datta, Managing Director, Oxford University Press India & Neighbouring Markets, said: “Oxford University Press is committed to advancing knowledge and learning across the world through cutting-edge learning and teaching resources. We are delighted to collaborate with Gateway College for the Gateway Oxford Maths Olympiad to inspire children by the power of mathematics in the most interactive and meaningful ways, and to continue playing a part in the development of their critical thinking abilities and knowledge building.”

Gateway students will be prepared for the SLMC through the Gateway Oxford Maths Olympiad Basic Training course taught online by a renowned academic from a leading university in Sri Lanka. The champions of each of the Gateway schools will be recognised at the Gateway Awards Day receiving prizes gifted by OUP. All high performing students will be trained for local and international competitions.

Carrying forward the learning from the COVID-19 pandemic, GOMO is part of a series of Gateway’s new initiatives to enrich students with cutting edge technology and to sharpen their skills. The first such initiative was the Gateway Dialog InnovaThon that provided the students of the entire network of Gateway Schools the opportunity, not to just learn about App Development, but to showcase their skills creatively.
