Ed. Ministry and UGC to reduce waiting time for university admission

The Education Ministry has drawn plans to reduce the waiting period for university admissions from this year onwards, a senior ministry official said.

The plan, when implemented, will enable the authorities to complete University admissions in three to four months after the G.C.E. A/L exams have ended.

This would effectively mean that the waiting period would be reduced by about nine months after the A/L exams conclude, he said.

Under the plan, the district cut off points would be released ahead of the results or along with the results.

“In order to expedite the admission process the University Grants Commission (UGC) will coordinate with relevant government authorities and get confirmation of the students’ residential areas instead of the students visiting government departments for the confirmation of residency,” he said.

“The objective is to enlist the students as soon as possible to the universities and avoid any injustice, as they have to wait for many months before they gain entrance to the universities,” he added.

University admissions will also not be held up due to the re-correction process as past findings show that there is only a marginal change in results and therefore arrangements will be made to accommodate those students without making an adjustment in the students who have already been admitted.

The Ministry is also planning to conduct the G.C.E. O/L exams in August and the G.C.E. A/L exams in December to ensure that maximum benefit of the school space is made use, instead of closing class rooms after the A/L exams have ended.

The O/L results will be released earlier than usual so students can start on A/L classes as soon as possible.
