Sri Lanka will attempt to attract cultural and business events organisers especially from West Asia to the island’s many locations amid challenges from the continuing coronavirus global pandemic.

Weddings, business programmes and cultural events could be promoted, under health precautions, tourism officials believe. All visitors are required to pay for mandatory local Covid-19 insurance of US$12, with one month cover of US$50,000 to be paid through visitsrilanka.gov.lk /SLTDA.

Traditional food items could also be promoted to woo tourists, officials believe.

These themes were among those highlighted during the Dubai Expo 2022 where Sri Lanka has a pavilion. On display were gems and jewellery, tea, and handicrafts.

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, who visited Dubai, told the Sunday Times: “As a new trend, since Sri Lanka has kept the Covid-19 situation under control there have been requests to have more events including large parties and gatherings.’’

Foreign Minister G L Peiris, who was also in Dubai, said at the opening of the pavilion, that the United Arab Emirates is one of the largest trade partners, while there is also a large number of Sri Lankan migrant workers in the emirate.
