China’s Foreign Minister to meet President and PM today

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived here yesterday for a visit lasting less than 24 hours.

He was welcomed at the airport by Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa.

Mr Wang is scheduled to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning. Thereafter, he will visit the Colombo Port City — China’s flagship development project. He will tour the Port City for about 30 minutes and is due to leave the country later this afternoon.

The Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit coincides with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations and the 70th anniversary of the Rubber-Rice Pact between Sri Lanka and China.

Sri Lanka is the final leg of a five-nation tour that the minister began on January 4. He started his tour in eastern Africa, visiting Eritrea and Kenya, before travelling to the island nation of Comoros, followed by the Maldives and then Sri Lanka.

The Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit also coincides with the state-run People’s Bank agreeing to pay USD 6.9 million to China’s Qingdao Biotech Group Co., Ltd., for a shipment of fertiliser that was declared sub-standard.

On Friday, the People’s Bank announced that USD 6.9 million was paid to Qingdao Seawin Biotech, in terms of the Letter of Credit opened for the purchase of organic fertiliser.

The announcement came three days after the Colombo Commercial High Court dissolved an order preventing the payment to the Chinese company.

Earlier, the Ceylon Fertiliser Company Limited and Colombo Commercial Fertiliser (Pvt) Limited obtained a court order barring payments to the Chinese company after the National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS) said it had found the harmful bacteria Erwinia in a consignment of the fertiliser sent by Qingdao Biotech Group Co., Ltd. The company has disputed this, and in November last year, sent a Letter of Demand to NPQS asking for USD 8 million in damages.
