Walkways for recreation; muddy roads for daily grind

The main bus stand at Gunasinghapura has served as Colombo’s bus transport hub for decades. Thousands of commuters use this main bus stand on a daily basis.

The bus stand has suffered from years of neglect, however, and is now in a sad and dilapidated state. The massive plaque that was put up when the stand was opened to the public all those years ago has broken off, and is now propped up in a corner. The city map put up to assist commuters who might be unfamiliar with the city streets and bus routes is now so hopelessly cracked and faded that it is of no use to anyone.

Massive potholes are visible all around the stand while all the drains are clogged. Is it any wonder then that the stand becomes quickly flooded during heavy rains?

Quite simply, the place is an eyesore. Given all the talk about beautifying Colombo, one wonders why authorities did not take the opportunity provided by the lockdown to at least make some basic repairs to the main bus stand, but perhaps expecting them to be more proactive than reactive is too much.

One can only dread the nightmare it will become for commuters once the provincial travel restrictions too are lifted after October 31.
