A Cabinet sub-committee appointed to resolve the teacher’s salary issue will meet with union representatives within the next two weeks to seek their views on the resolution of the issue, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told the Education Times.

The unions have been called separately for discussions with the committee members and it would take at least two weeks to complete the discussions, he said.

However, he said, it was not possible to implement the salary structure which the unions are demanding as it would cost the Government more than Rs 68 billion annually and cause an imbalance in salaries of other sectors.

“We will have to prepare a new structure to be implemented,” Mr Amaraweera said.

He said, they would have to take into consideration the Government’s budgetary position as well.

Meanwhile trade unionist Mahinda Jayasinghe said they were opposed to individual discussions and hoped to meet the committee as a group.

Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) Secretary Joseph Stalin said they were not sure if this committee is similar to previously appointed committees, but were not judging them in advance.

The sub-committee consists of ministers WimalWeerawansa, Mahinda Amaraweera and Prasanna Ranatunga.
