Child sex abuse complaint turns into nightmare for family at Padukka police

A Padukka family has called on the Police Chief to carry out an impartial inquiry into their terrifying ordeal at the Padukka police station when they went there to make a complaint about a youth who was sending nude photographs to their 16-year-old daughter’s phone.

The girl’s father said they went to the Padukka police station to lodge a complaint but was told to come the following day as there were no female officers to take down the complaint.

The following day, the family lodged a complaint at the Mirihana police and then went to the Padukka police to tell them about it, according to the girl’s father.

He said Padukka officers had insisted that they should lodge a complaint at the Padukka police also. Accordingly, the family had given a statement, but the father said the statement was not accurately recorded. This led to a heated argument.

According to Senior Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana, the father was locked up in a police cell after the argument because the police officers felt he was obstructing them in carrying out their duties.

While the man was put behind bars, his wife and two children had remained at the Police station throughout the night.

The wife claimed that night she and her daughter wanted to use the toilet and they had been shown one at the back of the police station.

She claimed that while they were returning, a policeman tried to sexually abuse her and when she shouted for help, a few other policemen had come there and severely assaulted her.

After they were released the next day morning, they went to the Police Child and Women Bureau, where the officers advised them to go to police headquarters and make a complaint as the woman had bruises and swellings on her body.

Later the woman was hospitalised for four days during which she was subjected to an examination by a Judicial Medical Officer and a report is to be submitted to courts.

Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said an investigation was being carried out about the incident and a full statement would be released tomorrow.
