More rain and gusty winds are expected in the wake of the Southwest monsoon being fully active over the island.

The Meteorological Department has predicted fairly strong winds with a speed of around 40-50 kilo metres an hour, across the island.

Thereby, strong gusty winds up to 60 kilometres an hour can be expected in the western slope of the central hills, the Northern, North Central, Northwestern and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The Meteorology Department has warned the area people to be vigilant.

The Duty Meteorologist said showers or thundershowers could occur during the weekend at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, fairly heavy showers above 75mm could be expected at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. The wind speed could increase up to 70 kilometres an hour at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankesanturai via Mannar.

Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be especially vigilant.
